The START Program - Selkirk

The START Program is a community mobilization model that focuses on collaborating with community agencies to create a team to work alongside the client to best support them. 


Monthly team meetings allow all agencies involved with the client to fully understand the client’s unique situation and collaboratively create solutions. 


START works from a client-centred, trauma-informed and culturally inclusive perspective. 

START Youth - Selkirk

Participants must reside in Selkirk, St. Andrews, St. Clements or Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.

The START Program is a community mobilization model that focuses on collaborating with community agencies to create a team to work alongside the client and their family and began serving youth in 2002.


START Youth assists youth who are experiencing challenges in various areas of their lives by coordinating and advocating for resources and providing ongoing supports.


To be eligible for the START Youth program, clients must:

  • Be under the age of 18 (or under 21 if still in school)
  • Be experiencing challenges in various areas of their lives.
  • Reside in the catchment area(s) of the program

Youth may be experiencing challenges in these areas of their lives:

  • Mental Health concerns
  • Physical health concerns
  • Substance Use concerns
  • School refusal/lack of attendance
  • Academic struggles
  • Involvement with police
  • Involvement with Probations 
  • Involvement with CFS
  • Being victim of a crime
  • Family relational concerns

Re-START For Adults - Selkirk

Participants must reside in Selkirk, St. Andrews, St. Clements or Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.


Re-START began serving adults involved in the justice system in 2019.


The program, initiated by the Department of Justice, is offered in several communities across Manitoba.


To be eligible for the Re-START Program, clients must:

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have been involved in the justice system in any way (victim, mental health assistance, missing, or charged)
  • Reside in the catchment area(s) of the program

Re-START helps to support clients who may be struggling in the following areas:

  • Lack of/inadequate housing
  • Justice system involvement
  • Problematic substance use
  • Unemployment
  • Mental or physical health concerns
  • Returning to school
  • Family relational difficulties

Goals of the Re-START Program includes:

  • To assist clients by coordinating and advocating for resources by using a non-judgmental and client-centred approach.


  • To assist our clients to reduce their involvement in the justice system through creating and achieving meaningful goals.



How we help:

  • Supporting adults who are Justice Involved in creating and reaching positive goals.
  • Utilizing community and family resources to intervene, plan for and support clients.
  • Assist our clients to reduce their involvement in the justice system by supporting positive behaviours through creating and achieving meaningful goals.
  • Ensuring all services relevant to the client are being accessed and the client is progressing through the program in the most effective way possible.
  • Provide coordination of interagency case planning and advocacy
  • Assist with some school or employment related costs
  • Assist with completing applications for treatment programs, schooling and government services.

The START Families Program

START Families is a consent based community mobilization program.


Utilizing the START and Safe & Together Models, we assist adults who are perpetrators of domestic violence to create new outcomes for their families.

To be eligible for the START Families Program, clients must:

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Have a history of perpetrating domestic violence/coercive control
  • Reside in the catchment area(s) of the program


Participants of START Families must reside in Selkirk, St. Andrews, St. Clements, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Beausejour, Oakbank, Ste. Anne, or Steinbach.
